How to encode or decode Base64

  1. Choose Encode to turn text into Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into text.
  2. Type or paste into the top box. The result appears instantly.
  3. Use Swap to send the result back to the input and reverse the direction.

Text is encoded as UTF-8, so accented letters, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and emoji all work. When decoding, line breaks, missing = padding, URL-safe characters and data: URL prefixes are handled automatically. If the decoded data is an image or another file, you can preview or download it.

What is Base64?

Base64 represents any data using only 64 safe characters: A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /. It is used to put binary data where only text is allowed: email attachments, images embedded in HTML or CSS as data URLs, JSON APIs, and HTTP Basic authentication headers. Base64 output is about 33% larger than the original.

FAQ

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.

What is URL-safe Base64?

Standard Base64 uses + and /, which have special meanings in URLs. Base64url replaces them with - and _ and usually drops the = padding. It is used in JWTs and many web APIs.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files are read and converted inside your browser.
