How to convert grams to ounces
To convert grams to ounces, divide the value by 28.349523125, or multiply it by about 0.035274.
oz = g ÷ 28.349523125
Example: 10 g ÷ 28.349523125 = 0.35274 oz
How to convert ounces to grams
To convert ounces to grams, multiply the value by 28.349523125.
g = oz × 28.349523125
Example: 10 oz × 28.349523125 = 283.495 g
1 g = 0.035274 oz · 1 oz = 28.3495 g
These are the ordinary (avoirdupois) ounces used for food and parcels: one ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams, and 16 ounces make a pound. Gold and silver are weighed in troy ounces, which are heavier at about 31.1 grams.
Grams and ounces
The gram is one thousandth of a kilogram; it was originally defined as the mass of one cubic centimeter of water. The ounce on a kitchen scale or a food label is the avoirdupois ounce, one sixteenth of a pound. It is the everyday small weight unit in the United States, for food, letters and parcels, and it still appears in older British recipes. Everywhere else, packages, recipes and nutrition labels use grams.
Baking and food packages
American recipes measure most dry ingredients by the cup, which is a volume, while European and Asian recipes weigh them in grams. A cup of flour has no fixed weight; it changes with how the flour is scooped and packed, which is why many bakers prefer a scale. When a US recipe does give weights, they are in ounces and pounds, often tied to standard package sizes:
| Item | Ounces | Grams |
|---|---|---|
| Snack-size bag | 1 oz | 28 g |
| Stick of butter (US) | 4 oz | 113 g |
| Block of cream cheese | 8 oz | 227 g |
| Bag of coffee beans | 12 oz | 340 g |
| Box of pasta | 16 oz (1 lb) | 454 g |
Nutrition labels outside the US list values per 100 g, which is 3.53 oz.
Gold, silver and the troy ounce
Precious metals use the troy ounce of exactly 31.1034768 g, about 9.7% heavier than a food ounce. Gold and silver prices are quoted per troy ounce, a “1 oz” bullion coin contains one troy ounce of fine metal, and a 1 kg bar holds 32.15 troy ounces. Put 31.1 g of pure gold on a kitchen scale set to ounces and it shows about 1.1 oz. Confusingly, the troy pound has only 12 troy ounces (373.24 g), so it is lighter than an ordinary pound (453.59 g).
Quick mental math
- Grams to ounces: multiply by 0.035. 250 g → 8.75 oz (exact: 8.82 oz), less than 1% low.
- Ounces to grams: multiply by 28. 8 oz → 224 g (exact: 226.8 g), about 1% low. Many cooks round to 30 g per ounce, which is easier but about 6% high.
Common mistakes
- Weighing a liquid that was measured by volume. “8 oz of milk” in a recipe usually means 8 fluid ounces (one cup, 237 mL), not 8 oz on a scale. For water-like liquids the two are close, but for honey or oil they are not. See mL to fl oz.
- Using food ounces for precious metals. Valuing 10 troy ounces of silver as if they were 10 ordinary ounces underestimates the metal by almost 30 g.
- Rounding 30 g per ounce in big recipes. For 2 lb (32 oz) of flour it gives 960 g instead of 907 g.
