How to convert square meters to square feet
To convert square meters to square feet, divide the value by 0.09290304, or multiply it by about 10.7639.
ft² = m² ÷ 0.09290304
Example: 10 m² ÷ 0.09290304 = 107.639 ft²
How to convert square feet to square meters
To convert square feet to square meters, multiply the value by 0.09290304.
m² = ft² × 0.09290304
Example: 10 ft² × 0.09290304 = 0.92903 m²
1 m² = 10.7639 ft² · 1 ft² = 0.092903 m²
One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square meters, and one square meter is about 10.764 square feet. Floor area of homes and offices is usually given in square feet in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Why the number is 10.76, not 3.28
A square meter is a square with sides of 1 m. Each side is 3.28 feet long, so the square covers 3.28 × 3.28 = 10.76 square feet. Area factors are always the length factor squared, which is why the meters-to-feet number gives a badly wrong answer for floor space.
For a room, you can convert each side first and then multiply, or multiply first and then convert the area; both give the same result. A 12 × 15 ft bedroom is 180 ft², and in meters it is 3.66 × 4.57 m = 16.7 m².
Floor area around the world
Home listings in the United States and Canada are in square feet, and so are apartment listings in Hong Kong. Most of Europe, China and Latin America use square meters. Some countries also keep a traditional unit:
- Korea: official documents have used square meters since 2007, but many people still talk in pyeong. One pyeong is 400/121 m², about 3.306 m² or 35.6 ft². A very common new-apartment size of 84 m² is 25.4 pyeong of exclusive floor area.
- Japan: land and buildings are often described in tsubo, the same size as a pyeong, and rooms in jō, the number of tatami mats. Mat sizes vary by region, but real-estate ads count one jō as at least 1.62 m², so a six-mat room is about 9.72 m², or 104.6 ft².
| Unit | Square meters | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| 1 jō (tatami, real-estate standard) | 1.62 | 17.44 |
| 1 pyeong / tsubo | 3.306 | 35.58 |
| 1 acre | 4,046.86 | 43,560 |
| 1 hectare | 10,000 | 107,639 |
Listings also measure differently: some count balconies, walls or shared areas and others don’t, so compare like with like before judging which home is bigger.
Quick mental math
- Square meters to square feet: multiply by 10, then add 8%. 50 m² → 500 + 40 = 540 ft² (exact: 538.2 ft²). Multiplying by 11 is even quicker but about 2% high.
- Square feet to square meters: divide by 10, then subtract 7%. 1,000 ft² → 100 − 7 = 93 m² (exact: 92.9 m²).
Common mistakes
- Multiplying by 3.28. That turns 100 m² into 328 ft² instead of 1,076 ft², off by more than a factor of three.
- Confusing “10 feet square” with “10 square feet”. The first is a square with 10 ft sides, which is 100 ft² (9.29 m²).
- Buying exactly the floor area. Flooring and tiles are sold by the box, often by the square foot in the US. Plans usually add 5–10% extra for cutting and waste.
